Ilonggo filmmaking is on its way to rise
again. With the selection of
“Beadworks,” a film brought to life by veteran photographer and film director
Ronny Poblacion from Janiuay, Iloilo, as one of the official film entries of
the Visayas to the Sineng Pambansa 2012, Ilonggo filmmaking has earned a notch
in the local entertainment industry. With the resounding success of “Beadworks”
originally conceptualized by Poblacion himself, the story was granted seed
money by the Film Development Council of the Philippines, Inc. (FDCP) last
year. When the epic movie that tells the story of a poor Ilonggo family who sew
beading design of gowns as livelihood and tackles social issues about poverty,
became a sensation from its various school campus screenings all over Western
Visayas, Poblacion envisions to continue expressing his artistry, sustain and
inspire the rise of regional filmmaking in Western Visayas.
“Beadworks” was recently selected for international
screening last April 20-21 at the ASEAN Cultural Festival at the City University
of Hong Kong. The film was embraced with enthusiasm and admiration by
international audience and Filipino migrant workers particularly, the Ilonggos
based in Hong Kong.
Pursuing the next step of uplifting Ilonggo
filmmaking, Poblacion conceptualize a heart-warming comedy love story set to be
made as his next full-length film with artist-writer Ronelo Ladiao, who
transformed the plot into a full screenplay. The film entitled “Pangyaw,” a
Chinese terminology “Peng You” which means “friend” is an inspiring film
project that will have a cross-cultural merging with the Chinese and Ilonggo
culture. The plot revolves around four young people who will become close
friends and a love story will emerge within the group, destined to change their
lives forever. The movie was partly shot in Hong Kong last month and will
resume a series of filming in different locations in Western Visayas. “Pangyaw”
is scheduled to conclude filming sometime in October and will probably have its
international premier in Hong Kong in the last quarter of 2013.
“Pangyaw” will feature a stellar cast of
young and promising Ilonggo actors such as filmmaker-artist Chuck Luat, Jana
Marin and Kieth Mamon. Joining the cast is Manila-based singer-composer-actor
Chris Valera who recently had a cameo role in the top-rating TV series “Be
Careful with My Heart.”
Driven by a calling of passion for
filmmaking and inspire Ilonggo artists, Poblacion with the cast of “Pangyaw” is
set to have a mini-press conference and premier of the movie’s teaser trailer on
May 16, 5pm at the Fountain Area of Robinsons Place Iloilo as part of SIGHTS
& SOUNDS 2013, a tourism pop culture event boasting with a multi-media
photography arts exhibit and acoustic concert of rising Ilonggo music artists.
