8 Reasons You Were Raised in Iloilo City

1. You have the best appetite for Batchoy. In fact, you consider it as comfort food better than any other Chinese noodle soup-based dishes. When you consume this dish, extra soup, a lot of garlic and crushed chicharons will complete your meal.

2. Nothing tastes better than Roberto’s Siopao. You’re one of those locals and even visitors who line up in their one and only store to buy their luscious siopao that comes in various royalty sizes – the biggest one is called Queen Siopao. And yeah, you enjoy ketchup as condiment instead of the usual black-sticky siopao sauce.

3. When visitors ask for pasalubongs (keepsakes) from Iloilo City, what comes in your mind in no particular order are Biscocho, Roberto’s Siopao and Deocampo’s pinasugbo.

4. When locals agree to meet you in the Iloilo City proper along Iznart-J.M. Basa streets or Unitop just across Socorro Pharmacy, accidentally you get to call it Cinema, the location of the old and biggest movie theater in Iloilo City before.

5. If locals or visitors ask where in Iloilo City they can find the best place to eat “talaba” (oyster), Villa Arevalo or Villa Beach instantly pops in your mind. Villa used to be one of the favorite hangout and nightlife spots in Iloilo City back in the old days.

6. Before 7- Eleven or Mini-Stop invaded Iloilo City’s 24-hour convenient store phenomenon, true-bloodied Ilonggos still recognizes “Buho” (Hole) Bakeshop at the back of Sun Yat Sen High School along Mapa Street as the only late night store that sells one of the best tasting “pandesals” and other bread products in the city.

7. Going out of town and wanting to bring food or light meals along the way? Locals would usually drop by at Tibiao Bakeshop both located at Molo and Tabuc Suba, Jaro.

8. If shopping is your “thing” away from the usual Department store ambiance and you want to save money, locals often consider Diamonds, Shanghai, Sam’s, Elsans and many other retail shops in Calle Real (J.M Basa Street, etc.) as the best place to satisfy their “shopaholic” craving.
